The Hang Seng TECH Index is undergoing a substantial transformation, moving beyond its previous limitations to embrace a broader spectrum of technological innovation. This strategic revamp aims to better reflect the evolving landscape of the tech sector by incorporating more companies and refining its selection criteria, following extensive market engagement.
Details of the Revamped Hang Seng TECH Index
In a significant development for the Hong Kong financial market, Hang Seng Indexes has unveiled a comprehensive set of changes to its TECH Index methodology. These modifications are the culmination of a month-long consultation process initiated in August 2026, which solicited valuable input from various industry stakeholders across Hong Kong, mainland China, and other international markets.
One of the most pivotal adjustments is the removal of industry-specific constraints. Previously, the TECH Index limited eligible companies to five distinct industries as defined by the Hang Seng Industry Classification System. Under the new framework, these restrictions are lifted, opening the door for a wider array of technology-focused enterprises to be considered for inclusion. This move is designed to make the index more inclusive and representative of the diverse and rapidly expanding technology sector.
Accompanying this liberalization is an expansion of the technology themes covered by the index. The number of core technology themes will increase to six, incorporating established areas such as digital platforms and solutions, artificial intelligence, advanced hardware, robotics and automation, and cloud computing. Crucially, a new category for frontier technologies has been introduced, signaling a forward-looking approach to capture emerging innovations. Furthermore, the number of sub-themes will be significantly bolstered, rising from 16 to 24, allowing for a more granular classification of technological specializations.
The selection mechanism for index constituents is also being re-engineered, adopting a sophisticated two-stream process. The initial universe of eligible companies will be confined to those already part of the Hang Seng Composite LargeCap and MidCap Index. From this pool, companies will be chosen through two parallel streams: one based on market capitalization and the other on 12-month sales growth rankings.
To ensure robust financial standing, Hang Seng has stipulated additional criteria for non-constituent companies. These firms must demonstrate an average daily turnover of at least $100 million over the preceding three months. For companies seeking inclusion via the sales growth stream, an impressive annual sales figure of at least $500 million must be recorded for each of the two most recent consecutive financial years.
The most tangible outcome of these changes will be the expansion of the TECH Index's composition. The total number of constituents will increase from 30 to 50. Out of these, 40 companies will be selected primarily based on their market capitalization, with the remaining 10 chosen for their outstanding sales growth performance. These transformative changes are scheduled to be implemented during the December 2026 index rebalancing, marking a new chapter for the Hang Seng TECH Index.
The proactive measures taken by Hang Seng Indexes to evolve the TECH Index are highly commendable. By removing archaic industry barriers and embracing a more dynamic selection methodology, the index is poised to become an even more accurate and compelling benchmark for the technology sector. The inclusion of frontier technologies and a greater number of sub-themes ensures that the index will remain relevant and responsive to future innovations. This strategic move not only enhances the appeal of the TECH Index for investors but also reinforces Hong Kong's position as a vibrant hub for technological and financial advancements.
