Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) has recently unveiled four new Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), strategically designed to follow the performance of three unique cross-market indices. These new investment vehicles, introduced between September 24 and 28, are poised to strengthen financial ties between Hong Kong and major global markets. This initiative represents a significant step towards enhancing portfolio diversification and facilitating capital movement across borders for investors.
The newly listed ETFs are specifically linked to the HKEX Bursa Malaysia Large Cap Index, the HKEX KRX Semiconductor Index, and the HKEX Tech & US Tech 100 Index. These products mark the first investment offerings based on these three benchmarks, which were established earlier this year with the explicit goal of improving market connectivity. The indices themselves are structured with a 60/40 weighting, dedicating approximately 60% to Hong Kong-listed securities and the remaining 40% to international equities, thereby promoting a balanced investment approach.
This innovative weighting strategy is intended to support a wider array of investment choices, encouraging both international and mainland Chinese investors to explore diverse portfolios. Furthermore, it aims to stimulate cross-market capital flows and contribute to the evolution of innovative index-based financial products. The HKEX's commitment to fostering a more interconnected and dynamic investment landscape is evident in these new listings.
A notable aspect of this launch is the collaborative effort behind two of the indices. The HKEX Bursa Malaysia Large Cap Index was developed through a partnership with Bursa Malaysia Berhad, whilst the HKEX KRX Semiconductor Index resulted from a joint venture with the Korea Exchange. According to Buyeon Yi, President of Korea Exchange's Future Strategy Division, the semiconductor index provides an unprecedented avenue for accessing Asia's semiconductor industry through companies listed in both South Korea and Hong Kong, highlighting the strategic regional focus of these new offerings.
In essence, these new ETF listings by HKEX represent a forward-thinking approach to global market integration, offering enhanced investment opportunities and promoting stronger financial links between critical economic hubs.
