HKEX and S&P Dow Jones Launch New Joint Index for US and Hong Kong Equities

Instructions

In a strategic move to broaden investment horizons and enhance market integration, the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) has collaborated with S&P Dow Jones Indices to unveil a groundbreaking co-branded index. This new index is meticulously designed to monitor the performance of both leading US-listed corporations and prominent technology enterprises based in Hong Kong, offering investors a diversified exposure to two significant equity markets.

Details of the Collaborative Index

The newly introduced S&P 500 & HKEX Tech 100 Index, officially launched on September 30, is structured to provide a balanced yet dynamic investment benchmark. It strategically allocates approximately 60% of its composition to the HKEX Tech 100 Index, which encompasses Hong Kong’s largest technology firms with substantial involvement in cutting-edge sectors like artificial intelligence, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, electric vehicles, smart driving, information technology, internet services, and robotics. The remaining 40% is dedicated to the renowned S&P 500, representing 500 of the United States' foremost companies and covering roughly 85% of the available US market capitalization. The index undergoes quarterly rebalancing to maintain its strategic allocation and relevance. This initiative is poised to support the future inclusion of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) tracking this index within the Southbound Stock Connect program, thereby facilitating greater portfolio diversification and fostering robust cross-market capital flows between these pivotal financial hubs.

This collaboration marks a significant step towards enabling investors to access a wider array of equities through a single, comprehensive benchmark. By combining the innovative growth potential of Hong Kong's tech giants with the stability and breadth of the US market, the index offers a compelling proposition for those seeking to optimize their investment strategies and navigate the complexities of global financial landscapes. This development underscores Hong Kong's continuous efforts to strengthen its position as a leading international financial center.
